Betty J. (Nelson) Johnson

October 8, 1921 — October 26, 2012

Betty J. Johnson age 91, of Holgate died Friday, October 26, 2012 at Vancrest Healthcare Center of Holgate.

Her Legacy… She was born October 8, 1921 to William V. and Gladys (Evans) Nelson in Dekalb County, IN.  She graduated from Waterloo High School in 1939.  She obtained her degree from the Defiance College.  On March 7, 1941 Betty married Paul Johnson in Auburn, IN.  Betty was a homemaker and a teacher/librarian for Holgate Local Schools for 30 years retiring in 1985 and was a member of the Holgate United Methodist Church.  Betty volunteered her time as a former Girl Scout Leader and was a member of the Eastern Star and American Legion Auxiliary Post #340.  She was a member of the Red Hat Society.

Her Family… Betty is survived by her loving family: daughter, Sharon (Larry) Rumbaugh, Lakeland, FL and sons, Phil (Peggy) Johnson, Napoleon and Carl Johnson, St. Petersburg, FL; 8 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren and sisters Marjorie Hassett and Carol Warstler.  She was preceded in death by her husband Paul, February 12, 1999 and a brother William “Roger” Nelson.

Her Farewell Services… Friends will be received in the Zachrich Funeral Home, 114 William Street, Holgate on Sunday from 1-4 and 5-7 pm.  The Celebration of Betty’s Life will be on Monday at 11:00 am in the funeral home with Pastor Susan St. Peter officiating.  Entombment will be in Riverview Memory Gardens rural Defiance.  Contributions can be made in Betty’s memory to the Holgate United Methodist Church Building Fund.
