Charles Franklin Ellis Sr. age 97,   of Hamler died early Wednesday morning, March 18, 2015 at Vancrest Healthcare Center of Holgate.

His Legacy… Charles was born the son of William Charles and Theo (Merryfield) Ellis.  On October 4, 1941 he married the love of his life, Bernadine “Bernie” Ritz.  Chuck was then stationed in New Guinea during WWII.  He was attached to the 84th Naval Construction Battalion.  After returning from the war, he operated a crane and was a barber for 20 years.  Chuck was a member of Holgate United Methodist Church and life member of both New Bavaria VFW and Hamler American Legion.  He and Bernie both enjoyed antique tractor shows for over 20 years in their retirement.

His Family… He is survived by his son Chuck (Becky) Ellis, Jr., St. Joe IN; 6 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.  Charles was preceded in death by his wife of 73 years; daughter Brenda Huber and her husband John.

His Farewell Services… Friends will be received in the Zachrich Funeral Home, 114 William Street, Holgate on Sunday from 3-5 and 6-8 pm and again at 10:00 am before the service.  The Celebration of Chuck’s life will begin at 11:00 am on Monday, March 23, 2015 in the funeral home with Reverend Susan St. Peter officiating.  Burial will follow in the Marion Township Cemetery, Hamler.  In lieu of flowers, contributions made in Chuck’s memory can be made to the Hamler Historical Society or the Holgate United Methodist Church.
