Doris "Bernie" (Ritz) Ellis

Doris Bernadine “Bernie” Ellis age 94, of Hamler died Thursday evening at Vancrest of Holgate.

Her Legacy… She was born January 6, 1920 to Chester and Eva (Burk) Ritz in Marion Township. On October 4, 1941 she married Charles Ellis. She was a member of the Holgate United Methodist Church, New Bavaria VFW and Hamler American Legion. Bernie worked in a bomb plant in Willow Run, MI for three years during the war. She and Chuck both enjoyed antique tractor shows for over 20 years in their retirement. She loved to collect Fenton and Westmorland milk glass and had several hundred pieces. She also excelled at cooking, making an exceptional three tiered German chocolate cake. Sewing, needlepoint and canning were also things she enjoyed doing.

Her Family… Bernie is survived by her loving husband of 73 years; her son, Chuck (Becky) Ellis, St. Joe, IN; 6 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her daughter Brenda and her husband John Huber and sisters Loretta Giesige and Dorothy Plotts.

Her Farewell Services… Friends will be received in the Zachrich Funeral Home, 114 William Street, Holgate on Sunday from 3-5 and 6-8 pm and again one hour before the funeral service.  The celebration of Bernie’s life will be in the funeral home on Monday, October 13, 2014 at 11:00 am with Reverend Susan St. Peter officiating.  Burial will follow in Marion Township Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, contributions in Bernie’s memory can be made to the Hamler Public Library or the Holgate United Methodist Church.
