Eugene John Zachrich

June 21, 1921 — March 9, 2011

Eugene John Zachrich age 89, of rural Holgate, died Wednesday afternoon, March 9, 2011 at the CHP Defiance Area Inpatient Hospice Center.

His Legacy… He was born in Holgate June 21, 1921 to John Henry and Dorothy May (Smith) Zachrich. He unselfishly served in the United States Army during WWII, stationed in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater and Philippine Liberation. Gene was a member of the Defiance VFW. On April 21, 1946 he married Erma Grossman. She preceded him in death on April 16, 1999. Eugene was a trustee and member of St. Stephen Lutheran Church, Rural Defiance. Gene was a retired farmer. He was a quality carpenter and builder, building homes in six counties. He worked in the maintenance department at the former Quality Care Nursing Home in Holgate. In his past time he liked to tinker in the garage and recycle. He enjoyed playing dart ball and shuffleboard.

His Family… He is survived by his loving family: sons, Richard (Linda) Zachrich, Holgate and Larry Zachrich, Defiance; daughters, Kathleen Zachrich, Archbold, Eileen (Tom) Ramus, New Bavaria, Irene (Tom) Goltzene', Loxahatchee, FL, and Ruth (James) Ankney, Holgate; 14 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and 1 great great granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Mable Helmke and Alice Meyer and a grandson Jamey Ankney.

His Farewell Services… Friends and family will be received in the Zachrich Funeral Home, Holgate on Friday from 2-8 PM and one hour before the funeral at the church. The celebration of Eugene's life will be on Saturday, March 12, 2011 at 11:00 AM in the St. Stephen Lutheran Church, rural Defiance with Reverend William Stottlemyer officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made in Eugene's honor to St. Stephen Lutheran Church, Defiance Area Inpatient Hospice Center or a charity of your choice.
